Newtown appoint McKenzie, Williams

Newtown Football Club have appointed stand-in manager Callum McKenzie as their permanent boss with Craig Williams returning to the club as player-assistant manager.

McKenzie stepped in earlier this month when Scott Ruscoe was sacked following a disappointing start to the season, and in a statement tonight the club said he would take the reins as first team head coach, having previously had the roles of assistant manager and technical director at the club. Ruscoe’s assistant Nathan Leonard has also left the club after just five months in the role.

While Williams departed Newtown for Caersws last season, he is still Newtown’s Head of Academy and will continue that role alongside his new responsibilities. He has already amassed over 500 appearances for the club and has been in fine form for the Bluebirds this season.

Newtown CEO Paul Wetton said: I am extremely excited by these appointments. Having already worked with Callum and Craig at the club in their other roles, I can say with absolute confidence that they are two of the best coaches that I ever had the privilege to work with."

Newtown's match with Connah's Quay Nomads tonight was cancelled following a pitch inspection.
