Welshpool promotion blocked by cricket league

Welshpool Cricket Club have been blocked from promotion in the Shropshire League despite finishing a brilliant second in Division Three this summer.

While Newtown’s promotion to the Premier League has been rubber stamped after winning Division One, Welshpool will face another season in Division Three with league chiefs facing a challenge to balance out the leagues with two teams dropping back into Shropshire cricket from the Birmingham League.

Division Three only had 11 teams this season, so three teams have been relegated from Division Two, and two teams promoted from Division Four to replace the bottom two who were relegated, bringing the division back up to 12 teams.

But it means Welshpool cruelly miss out on going up.

The club has not officially responded publicly, but one player told us it was “very, very disappointing” and a “kick in the teeth following such a long hard season”.

Promotion and relegation in the Shropshire League is always a contentious topic, and depends largely on who gets relegated from the more senior Birmingham League.

But Welshpool will feel understandably aggrieved after clinching runners-up spot with a dramatic last day win.

But on a more positive front, both Newtown and Llanidloes have announced new teams, showing just how popular cricket is becoming in Montgomeryshire.

Newtown III and Llanidloes II will play in Sunday Division Three, providing an excellent route to senior cricket for both clubs’ growing youth sections.
