In-form local rugby sides look to build on strong starts

Welshpool host Rhyl in Division Two North at the Maesydre this weekend looking to build on their strong start to the season, writes Gary Williams.

The visitors have made an impressive start to the season, sitting in third place with three wins out of four games played. But Pool, top of the table with an unbeaten four games played, will face a stern challenge, especially with a few regulars out through unavailability and injury.

Welshpool head coach, Daley Jones, said: “This is going to be a real test and those coming in to the team have a chance to grab their opportunity and push for regular starts. Rhyl look to have recruited well during the summer and we’re anticipating a very close game once again.”

Elsewhere in Division Two, Newtown take on Colwyn Bay for the second week running. They will be confident after a big win last week in the Cup against the Bay, who sit second in the league, but I’m anticipating a much-changed side for the visitors and a much closer scoreline.

Machynlleth, after a disappointing start to the season after promotion from Division Three, appear to have settled and have picked up a couple of wins in recent weeks.

They travel to bottom side Caernarfon 2nds and, providing they take their full squad, should have enough firepower to claim their third win of the season.

In Division One, COBRA travel to Ruthin where they will be looking to pick up points against a side who have made a very disappointing start to the season and are third from bottom.

For COBRA, sitting halfway in the table, this is a game that could go either way with home advantage possibly being the deciding factor.

COBRA 2nds have reversed their fixture in Division Three North East and will travel with their first team to Ruthin to face their second string. With both sides in the mid-way positions in the table, again it’s a game that's too close to call.

High-flying Llanidloes, with four wins out of four, travel to Bro Gwernant who have three defeats out of three games played, and form suggests that Llani will make it five out of five. However, Bro on their own patch are never an easy side to beat and I’m expecting a closer scoreline than the table suggests.
