Weather mostly wins, but some games beat the rain

As cricket reached the halfway stage on Saturday, a number of local clubs are still in with a chance of winning their divisions.

Newtown are still top of Shropshire Division One despite their match with Shifnal II being abandoned and main rivals Cound winning. The difference now though is just a point.

Aaron Ruff-Cock smashed a brilliant 91 as Montgomery picked up a 103-run victory over Sentinel II in Division Two.

His 55-ball innings included 9 fours and 6 sixes as his side reached 186-9 from a reduced 35 overs, well out of reach for the visitors who were restricted to 83-8.

Welshpool’s run chase at Newport II was cut short because of the weather after they were set a target of 185-7, keeping them second in Division Three. Guilsfield & Llandrinio were without a fixture.

In Division Four, Newtown II’s match at Condover was abandoned, but Llanidloes recorded an excellent win at Shifnal III before the rain came.

Blake Spiller (4-25) and Harry Turner (4-42) ensured the hosts were bowled out for 118, with Spiller then finishing unbeaten on 36 to steer Llani through to a rapid six-wicket win.

It was a tough day at Welshpool II who were dismissed for just 57 by Ludlow III in Division Six, and Montgomery II’sgame was abandoned at Forton II.

Three wickets each for Garry Foster, Phil Edwards and Sandeep Salin did the damage as Guilsfield & Llandrinio II won at Ellesmere II by five wickets in Division Seven. Jinil Thilakin then hit an unbeaten 38 to see the villagers home in the 24th over.
