600 trees to be planted on a space the size of a tennis court

Six hundred trees will be planted on an afrea the size of a tennis court on one of Newtown's open spaces.

The area is within part of Trehafren Fields where work on paths and heavy machinery has caused damage to the ground due to the weather conditions.

Open Newtown, which looks after the green space, has defended the conditions and has said the area fenced off will be used for a project funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

It announced the news on social media and it comes after complaints about the impact of work where new paths are being created.

In a statement, Open Newtown said: "We’ve been chosen as a site for one of Earthwatch Coetiroedd Bach, or Tiny Forests, funded by the Cronfa Treftadaeth y Loteri Gen / National Lottery Heritage Fund - Cymru and Welsh Government.

"This will see 600 trees planted in an area the size of a tennis court. This is a tried and tested technique that will return extensive benefits in a short amount of time.

"There will be an outdoor classroom, which our partner in the project Ysgol Calon y Dderwen (and any other school who would like to use it) will use for forest school activities.

"The pupils will be planting some of the trees towards the end of the month. There will also be an open to the public planting day on the 23rd of November – so please save the date."

It added: "We will be encouraging members of the community to become Tree Keepers, helping us and Earthwatch to monitor the progress of the Coetiroedd Bach. If this sounds like something you’d be interested in, please come along to the planting day next month, or email jerry@opennewtown.org.uk"
