Montgomeryshire’s pub industry contributes a mighty £24 million every year into the local economy, a mouth-watering figure that has been shared by Montgomeryshire Senedd Member.

While the Welshpool area is known for its fantastic selection of pubs, the wider shire is home to 112 pubs and three breweries, who together support 742 jobs.

Mr Russell was speaking after meeting with the Welsh Beer and Pub Association who represent many of Wales’ brewers and pubs.

“Our conversation was about some the of the challenges the industry faces,” said Mr George. “Business rates, the Welsh Government’s Deposit Return Scheme, and the negative effect of a Tourism Tax.”

The pub industry in Welshpool has enjoyed somewhat of a renaissance in recent times with the Talbot and the Owl & Pussycat both providing fresh drinking options. Major investment is currently going into the Pinewood and The Angel with the former set to reopen in 2025. The Pheasant and The Wellington have also relaunched under new management recently.
