A heritage plaque commemorating the birthplace of social reformer Robert Owen has been unveiled in Newtown, his birthplace.

The plaque has been unveiled on the current building occupied by HSBC which was built on the site of the original building.

The event was organised by Newtown Local History Group and attended by a range of people from the town, the town council, Russell George MS, Newtown College, and pupils from Ysgol Robert Owen.

They were joined by the Mayor, Cllr Mike Childs, who together unveiled the plaque which also forms part of the Newtown Heritage Trail.

"This year marks the 100th Anniversary where Robert Owen's Birthplace was demolished to make way for the Midland Bank which is now the HSBC Bank. And the 95th Anniversary of Robert Owen's Memorial Museum which was opened in May 1929 and situated on the top floor of the Bank. Almost 50 years ago the museum was then moved to Brisco House across the road," said Ann Evans of the history group.
