Charity food parcel and Christmas present appeal grows

A major community food drive is underway in Newtown this week as members of a local motorcycle group and Newtown Rugby Club collect donations for The Salvation Army ahead of what is expected to be another high-demand Christmas.

The Salvation Army in Newtown supported 290 families with food parcels or vouchers last December, and Territorial Envoy, Samantha Jones, said similar levels of need are anticipated this year.

“We expect to be just as busy,” she said. “We’re incredibly grateful to the Outlaw motorcyclists for riding to our assistance again. Having Newtown Rugby Club involved as well this year means we will be able to help even more people.”

The Mid Wales chapter of the American Outlaws Association motorcycle group has been carrying out its second annual food drive with the support of local businesses. A spokesperson said the group chose The Salvation Army because of the pressure local households are facing.

“This is our area, and we want to help with local issues by supporting local charities. With the kind support of businesses in Newtown, we’ve completed another food drive for the second year running, and we look forward to making this an annual tradition,” they said.

Newtown Rugby Club has also been gathering donations, asking players, coaches, volunteers and families connected with the club to contribute food items that will be handed over to the charity.

Youth coach Paul Herdman said the club wanted to respond to the challenges facing some families locally.
“This Christmas, we know some members of our community face a difficult winter, and we want to alleviate that,” he said.

The Salvation Army has also launched its annual Christmas Present Appeal. Its charity shop in Market Street is collecting gift vouchers for local retailers including Charlies, No1 High Street and Argos.

Jones said the support from the community would help ensure families in crisis are not left without assistance over Christmas.
