22/10/2024 @ 01:56

Network Rail has said it is working closely with all agencies involved in response to last night's rail accident in which a passenger died.

Two trains collided head on near Talerddig, close to Carno, at 7.29pm in what Transport for Wales described as a slow-speed impact.

One man, a passenger on one of the trains, died while 15 others were taken to hospital with non life threatening injuries.

Martin Frobisher, Network Rail’s director of safety and engineering, said: “We are deeply saddened by the train crash that occurred in Wales last night. Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this tragic incident, including passengers, train-crew members, and their families.

"We are working closely with the emergency services and the multi-agency team to fully understand the circumstances of what happened and why.

“Our immediate priority is to help support those impacted and to assist investigators in determining the cause of the crash. Such serious railway accidents are rare, and we are determined to make them rarer still.”

Emergency services, including two HM Coastguard helicopters, the Wales Air Ambulance, a police helicopter and ambulances attended the scene, resulting in the A490 being closed.

The road runs alongside the railway at the point of the impact.

British Transport Police is investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident.
