An initiative that is collecting leftover and excess food from Welshpool’s eateries to make available for the local community has officially launched, and is on the lookout for helpers.
The Community Fridge is being managed by Welshpool Town Council and has been funded by a grant from Powys County Council via local county councillor Richard Church.
The launch opened with a welcome from Welshpool Town Council’s Community Engagement Officer, Aggie Titley, who introduced the initiative and its purpose before Cllr Church spoke about the vision behind the project.
The ‘Fridge’ was then officially opened by Deputy Mayor, Councillor William Rowell (pictured on the right).
The Town Council also extended its thanks to directors from Newtown Food Surplus for attending and for their continued support and partnership.
Volunteers then completed their first collection with over 5kg of food collected from Starbucks Welshpool!
The project aims to reduce food waste while supporting local residents by redistributing surplus food that would otherwise go to waste.
“With rising living costs affecting many households, we believe this will be a valuable and much-needed resource for the community,” a spokesperson for the town council said.
The Community Fridge will accept surplus food from local businesses and also welcomes appropriate food donations from members of the public.
How to use the Community Fridge
