Big wins ahead of derby clash

Welshpool and Guilsfield & Llandrinio set the scene perfectly for this weekend’s local derby following their victories in Shropshire Division Three.

The pair sit third and fourth respectively in the table, with Welshpool making it five wins in a row with a four-wicket victory at Whitchurch II.

After electing to bat, Whitchurch were dismissed for 155 with three wickets each for Charlie Kinsey, Rob Anderson and Rupert Redway.

Solid knocks from Joe Cadwallader (30), Paul Chapman (27no) and Sam Cadwallader (24) ensured Pool secured the win in the 36th over with six wickets lost.

There were dramatic scenes at the LHG Oval where Guilsfield & Llandrinio secured victory with the second-to-last-ball.

Visitors Church Aston came out of the blocks quickly with their aggressive openers notching up rapid runs, but the villagers’ bowlers kept their composure to restrict them to 153 all out. Dave Williams (3-25) and Nasir Udin (3-32) led the way.

Andy Flann (29) and Matt White (21) got the reply off to a solid start, but it was a patient 40 from Rich Lewis that held the innings together and set up the last over drama and a two-wicket win.

In the Premier League, Newtown’s indifferent form continued following their seven-wicket defeat against Sentinel, who cruised to Newtown’s target of 159 all out. Jordan Baijnath top scored with 54 for Newtown.

Montgomery also tasted defeat in Division One at Frankton after being dismissed for just 101. Andrew Roscoe top scored with 39, but it wasn’t enough with Frankton easing to a seven-wicket win.

Llanidloes moved to the top of Division Four following a superb 238-6 run chase against previous leaders Frankwell II.

In-form opener Josh Hugo (53) and Dan Lewis (39no) led the chase with the winning runs coming in the final over and just one wicket to spare.

Newtown II kept up the pressure to move into second spot with a 166-run victory over Bomere Heath II. Danny Foulkes (76), Callum Foulkes (64) and Mike Bellamore (54) all struck half centuries to propel Newtown to 284-7, well out of reach for the visitors as Bellamore took 4-13 to ensure they ended on 118 all out.

Welshpool II suffered an eight-wicket defeat at home to Willey II who managed to catch the host’s first innings target of 152-6 in Division Five.

Lance Parkes (36) and Will Gannon (36) top scored as Welshpool set 152-6, but there were few bumps in the road to victory for Willey II in the 37th over.

A fine unbeaten 76 by Elwyn Turner ensured Montgomery II could post a decent first innings of 170 all out in Division Six against Whittington, who were bowled out for 81. Teenager Freddie Roberts took 5-19.

Guilsfield & Llandrinio II struggled for runs again after being set a target of 173-8 to chase at Alberbury II. Fred White (3-37) was the pick of the Guilsfield bowlers.

But only Garry Lewis made double figures with 29 as they crumbled to 54 all out, and hovering just above the Division Six relegation zone.

On Sunday, Newtown III suffered a high scoring defeat at Shifnal IV in Division Three who set a target 245-8. Newtown’s reply fell 15 runs short despite half centuries from Russell Powell (58) and Owain Jones (51).

Llanidloes II picked up a 170-run victory over Allscott Heath IV in Division Four to move into mid-table. Lewis Swallow hit an unbeaten 100 with Dave Moody adding an unbeaten 50 to steer Llani to 278-5.

Harry Jones (4-39) and Aiden O’Connor (4-18) then ripped through the visitors’ batting to secure the big win.
