It was a tough day at the office for Newtown and Montgomery on Saturday in the Shropshire leagues, but a brighter day for Guilsfield & Llandrinio, Welshpool and Llanidloes who recorded big wins.
Newtown collapsed to a 143-run defeat in their first home Premier League game of the season against Allscott Heath.
Earlier in the afternoon, Reino de Klerk took 3-22 as Newtown dismissed their visitors for 197, but the reply ended on just 54 wity Ben Price top scoring on 22.
It was a disappointing day too for Montgomery in Division One with runs also hard to come by at home to Bomere Heath.
After being put in to bat, Charles Clinton top scored with 39 as Monty finished their 50 overs on 141-9, never enough as the visitors cruised to a seven-wicket win in the 29th over.
Guilsfield & Llandrinio picked up their second Division Three win on the bounce after demolishing Column at the LHG Oval.
Dave Williams took 6-12 as the hosts were dismissed for just 83, allowing Andy Flann (24) and Matt White (22) to steer the villagers through to victory and to the top of the league.
Welshpool were in form too, returning from Ludlow II with the points after chasing down the hosts’ first innings target of 192-6. Opener Tom Bowen (70) and skipper Sam Cadwallader (44) led the way for a four-wicket win.
Llanidloes picked up their second consecutive win of the season to lead the way in Division Four after another strong all-round team performance.
Rob Davies (84) and Will Denham (52) ensured Llanidloes built a formidable first innings total of 214-3 from their reduced 30 overs, well out of reach for visitors Bridgnorth III who were dismissed for 127.
Josh Hugo (3-33) and Rob Davies (3-24) did the damage.
Three wickets apiece for Mike Bellamore and Henry Smout ensured Newtown II bowled Allscott Heath II out for just 135 for their first win of the season, also in Division Four.
Ian Hancocks then led the way to a six-wicket victory with an unbeaten 71, supported by Callum Foulkes (48).
Henry Day’s 47 wasn’t enough for Welshpool II who fell to a nine-wicket defeat at home to early Division Five pacesetters Bishop’s Castle.
Welshpool set a target of 146-9, with Castle facing little resistance in securing the win in the 24th over.
Guilsfield & Llandrinio II’s teenagers showed form with the ball, but a lack of runs saw them suffer a defeat in Division Six.
George Edwards (3-35) and Alex Howard (3-15) did their bit as hosts Column II reached 169, but the villagers were bowled out for just 88 in reply despite Alex Parry (30) and Edwards (21no) making some headway.
In Sunday Division Three, Newtown III launched their season with a 63-run defeat against Lilleshall IV who set a first innings target of 131-6, which proved to be enough.
