Work will begin next week on installing new permanent lights on Welshpool’s Cross, seven months after they were dramatically put out of action by a town centre explosion.
Local County Councillor, Richard Church, confirmed last night that work would begin on Monday and could lead to up to three weeks of disruption with one lane requiring closure at times and new temporary pedestrian access required.
He said: “I have been notified work will be done next week to repair the traffic lights in the centre of Welshpool.
“They have been out of order since an explosion outside the Royal Oak in January, and have been replaced by temporary lights. The temporary lights have blocked the pavements, causing particular problems for users of wheelchairs and mobility scooters as well as causing delays for motorists.
“The work is being done by the Welsh Government’s trunk road agency, not Powys County Council, and it involves the replacement of a part which they have been waiting for since January.
“They tell me the work will be carried out between Monday, July 20 and Friday, August 7 and may result in higher-than-normal noise levels at times, and they apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused.
“A temporary lane closure on Church Street will be in place for the duration of the works. Traffic management measures will also be implemented around the crossing points of the junction to ensure the safety of pedestrians and road users. Clearly signposted alternative pedestrian routes will be available throughout the works period.”
At recent Town Council meetings, councillors vented their anger at the length of time it has taken to sort the issue.
