New mayor and deputy mayor elected for Newtown

Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn Town Council has elected a new Town Mayor and Deputy Town Mayor to lead the authority over the coming year.

Councillor Margaret Lewington has been elected as Town Mayor for a two-year term, with Councillor Rupert Taylor elected as Deputy Town Mayor.

Councillor Lewington, who represents the West Ward, was first co-opted to the council in July 2022 and previously served as Deputy Mayor. The town council said she has been actively involved in community engagement, local partnerships and initiatives aimed at improving the town.

Councillor Taylor was first co-opted to the council in June 2017 and was re-elected in May 2022. The council said he has supported a number of community-led projects, including overseeing community grant funding for local organisations.

Speaking following her election, Councillor Lewington said: “I’m truly honoured and grateful for the support from the Council on becoming Town Mayor. Thank you for your confidence, encouragement, and trust.

“I look forward to serving our community with pride, dedication, and commitment, and to working together to make a positive difference for everyone.

“I would also like to congratulate Cllr Rupert Taylor on becoming the Deputy Town Mayor and look forward to working closely with him for our town.”

Councillor Taylor said: “First and foremost, I would like to thank my fellow councillors for their support. Congratulations to Councillor Margaret on being elected Town Mayor.

“I look forward to serving in this role with the new Town Mayor over the next year.”

Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn Town Council is one of the largest town councils in Powys, with 16 councillors representing the community and overseeing a range of local services and projects.
