Concerns raised over popular Newtown riverside pathway

Concerns have been raised over the condition of a popular Newtown riverside pathway regularly used by walkers and parkrun participants.

A report presented to Newtown Town Council by Open Newtown says complaints were received about an “unsafe pathway surface” on one of the town’s well used park routes.

The organisation said inspections had already been carried out following the concerns.

“We received a report of an unsafe pathway surface,” the report states.

Open Newtown said the surface was considered suitable for normal use but acknowledged there were uneven sections.

“On inspection the pathway surface is fine for its purpose, but the pathway does undulate in height,” the report says.

The route is understood to be regularly used by both parkrun and Junior parkrun events in Newtown.

“As the path is regularly used by parkrun and Junior parkrun, we’re investigating costs to level the pathway,” Open Newtown added.

The pathway issue forms part of a wider maintenance and safety programme being carried out across more than 100 acres of parkland managed by the organisation.

The latest report also outlines ongoing tree inspections, litter monitoring, grass cutting and biodiversity projects across areas including Trehafren Fields and Vaynor.
