Newtown park paths could be upgraded to improve accessibility

Informal walking paths across Newtown’s parks could be upgraded to improve accessibility and reduce muddy conditions.

Open Newtown says it has identified several well used routes across its green spaces that could benefit from being developed into proper mobility pathways.

The potential improvements were outlined in the organisation’s latest land management report to Newtown Town Council.

It states: “We’re aware of some informal pathways that would benefit from an extension of our mobility pathways, to reduce mud and standing puddles, and we will factor this work into our long-term repair work schedule.”

The upgrades could help improve access for people using wheelchairs, mobility aids, or pushchairs, while also protecting grass areas from damage caused by heavy footfall in wet weather.

Open Newtown manages more than 100 acres of green spaces in Newtown, including Dolerw Park, Trehafren Fields and Vaynor Fields, under a service level agreement with Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn Town Council and Powys County Council.

Any pathway improvements would form part of ongoing development and maintenance work across the town’s parks, the report said.
