Newtown town clock silenced after chime fault

One of Newtown’s most familiar town centre sounds has gone quiet after a fault caused the town clock to chime too many times, prompting the council to switch it off.

Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn Town Council says the clock mechanism has been temporarily silenced while a specialist engineer is arranged to inspect and repair the fault.

The issue is recorded in the latest Operations Manager’s Property Report prepared for the council’s Resources Committee. Members were told the problem was reported earlier this month after the clock began striking more often than it should.

The report states: “The Clock has been chiming a few too many times, as reported on Monday, 9th February 2026 and is currently silenced until an engineer can attend on 23rd February 2026.”

Councillors were also reminded that the town council is only responsible for the clock mechanism itself and not the wider building or clock tower structure.
