Garden waste collection costs set to rise

Newtown residents are being urgedto sign up now for this year’s garden waste recycling collections, with Powys County Council opening subscriptions ahead of the spring season and warning that prices are expected to rise from April.

The garden waste service starts again in early March, with collections taking place every two weeks through to late November.

Households that subscribe before the end of March will pay the same as last year, £60 for a 240 litre green bin, or £55 for a smaller 140 litre bin or compostable sacks. From April, the council expects the cost to increase slightly, to £62 and £57, in line with inflation and subject to final budget approval.

The paid for service covers the collection of grass cuttings, hedge trimmings and other garden waste, which is then turned into compost.

Residents who used the scheme last year have already been contacted about renewing. Anyone new to the service can also sign up, with bins delivered within 10 working days. A sticker system will be used so crews can quickly see which Newtown properties are registered.

Councillor Jackie Charlton, Powys County Council’s cabinet member for a greener Powys, said people who sign up early will get the best value.

“With spring just around the corner, many of us will soon be spending more time in our gardens. This easy, clean and simple collection service is a great way to get rid of garden waste, knowing it will be recycled into compost,” she said.

Residents are being reminded to check their bin collection day before the service begins, as some dates may have changed since last year.

Those who do not join the scheme can still compost at home or take garden waste to a Powys recycling centre. Subscriptions can be made online at the council website or by calling 01597 827465.
