A wide range of local groups have been awarded funding in the latest round of Newtown Town Council’s Community Fund, with councillors praising the dedication shown by volunteers and organisations across the area.
The October 2025 awards will support projects ranging from festive events and wellbeing programmes to heritage work and help for vulnerable residents.
Among those receiving grants is Hub of Hope, which will provide hot meals and companionship on Christmas Day for elderly and vulnerable people who might otherwise spend the holiday alone. Newtown Community Café has also been supported with winter running costs to maintain a warm, welcoming space and deliver meals to those who are housebound.
Funding has been awarded to several wellbeing and education initiatives, including Cre8 Wellbeing, which will run yoga, mindfulness and life-coaching sessions for children aged 7–11, and Lingen Davies, which is delivering a 12-week yoga programme for people living with or beyond cancer.
Heritage and outdoor projects are also featured. Heritage Hub 4 Mid Wales will digitally record the legacy of Sir Pryce Pryce-Jones, with bilingual storyboards, an exhibition next May and school activities planned. Cultivate Green Gym will use its grant to support weekly outdoor sessions combining gentle exercise with gardening and nature-based learning.
Local schools have also benefited. St Mary’s RC School will create a Movement Break Zone with outdoor gym equipment to support inclusive learning, while Penygloddfa School has been awarded funding for a festive steam-train trip for its infant pupils.
Other awards include support for Hope House to help purchase a fully accessible minibus, reducing isolation and improving access to hospice services, and Kindness Events Newtown, which will host a free three-day “Kindness at Christmas” celebration featuring donkey rides, Santa visits and an outdoor ice rink.
Cllr Rupert Taylor, Chair of the Resources Committee, said the scheme highlighted the strength of community spirit in the town.
He said: “These grants reflect the incredible dedication of our local organisations and volunteers. Each project brings people together, uplifts those in need, and strengthens the bonds that make Newtown and Llanwchaiarn a truly special community.”
The Town Council is encouraging community groups to apply for future funding rounds. Further information is available at www.newtown-tc.gov.wales
