Community groups, organisations, and businesses in Newtown are being urged to register as a ‘warm space’ this winter to help residents during the colder months.
Powys County Council is updating its list of venues across the county where people can go to stay warm, socialise, work, or take part in activities when temperatures drop. Grants of up to £2,000 are also available to help set up or improve facilities.
Local organisations that previously took part should have received an email from the council asking if they want to continue, while new venues in and around Newtown are being encouraged to sign up.
“These accessible, safe and warm spaces are a real lifeline for some of our most vulnerable residents during the winter,” said Cllr Matthew Dorrance, Powys County Council’s Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for a Fairer Powys. “So, if you think you can help your community out, please register your details and consider applying for a grant.
“This funding can be used to establish, or re-establish, a warm space, or to make improvements.”
The scheme is supported by £1.5 million of Welsh Government funding, which is distributed to councils across Wales through the Welsh Local Government Association.
Groups and venues in Newtown can find out more and register via the Powys County Council website at https://en.powys.gov.uk/creatingwarmspaces, or email costofliving@powys.gov.uk.
