Wear your poppy with pride, residents urged

Newtown’s residents are being asked to support the Royal British Legion’s annual Poppy Appeal and to wear their poppy with pride, as the town prepares for its Remembrance and Armistice Day commemorations.

The appeal, which runs through to 11 November, enables the Legion to provide vital support year-round to serving and ex-serving armed forces personnel and their families - from welfare and recovery assistance to help with civilian life transitions.

As part of the campaign, Powys County Council’s Armed Forces Champion and Deputy Leader, Cllr Matthew Dorrance, said: “Wearing a poppy is a simple yet powerful act of remembrance and gratitude. I encourage everyone to support the Poppy Appeal and wear their poppy with pride.”

In Newtown, the Remembrance Sunday parade and wreath-laying ceremony will take place on Sunday, 9 November at the town’s War Memorial Gardens. On Tuesday 11 November, a shorter Armistice Day service will be held at the gardens.

Road closures will be implemented in parts of the town centre during the events, and both ceremonies will be streamed live for those unable to attend in person.

Residents and organisations are encouraged to support the local appeal effort by pining a poppy, making a donation, or supporting any collection points around the town.

If your club, school or community group is organising a fundraising or remembrance event in Newtown around this time, please let us know and we’ll include it in our listings.
