Walk to mark Liberal triumph in 1880 election

A guided walk next week will give local people the chance to step back in time and learn more about Newtown’s role in a key moment of political history.

Historian Edward Parry will lead the Newtown and District Civic Society Walk on Thursday, 25 August. It will focus on the Liberal victory in the 1880 general election, which saw the first Liberal MP elected for Montgomeryshire.

The walk will start at The Cross, Newtown, at 2:30pm before heading up Broad Street and along Milford Road to the Old Parliament House, returning via Dolerw.

Organisers said the event will highlight some of the buildings connected to the election and the campaign that helped shape local politics at the time.
