21/07/2025 @ 06:39

A group of young people celebrated the completion of their Fire Cadets training at a special Pass Out Parade held at Newtown Fire Station.

The ceremony marked the culmination of two years of intensive training for the latest cohort of Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service (MAWWFRS) Fire Cadets, who have developed valuable skills through both practical fire station training and classroom education.

The cadets were presented with achievement certificates by Deputy Chief Fire Officer Iwan Cray, recognising their successful completion of the Fire Cadets qualification. The ceremony was attended by several distinguished guests, including the Mayor of Newtown, Peter Lewington, and MAWWFRS Fire Authority members Councillor Gwyn Evans and Councillor Elwyn Vaughan.

Family members, local dignitaries, and community representatives gathered to witness the parade, which demonstrated the cadets' progress in key areas including discipline, teamwork, leadership, and practical emergency response drills.

Fire Cadets Co-ordinator Karen Mayze praised the young people for their dedication and highlighted the programme's positive impact on both individuals and the wider community.

"It's inspiring to see how much these cadets have grown over their time with us," she said. "They've worked incredibly hard and today is a proud moment for them and their families."

The Fire Cadets programme has been designed to build confidence amongst young people whilst preparing them for future opportunities. Ms Mayze emphasised that the initiative showcases participants' achievements across multiple disciplines, helping to develop essential life skills that encourage positive choices for their futures.

MAWWFRS is currently recruiting new Fire Cadets at fire stations across the service area. The programme is open to young people aged 13 to 16 who are seeking new challenges and opportunities to develop practical skills whilst gaining unique insights into emergency services work.

The initiative offers participants the chance to build confidence, learn exciting new abilities, and experience hands-on training that provides valuable preparation for potential careers in the emergency services sector.

Young people interested in applying for the Fire Cadets programme can find more information through Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service website.
