Watch out for flood damaged roads

18/10/2024 @ 01:53

Motorists are today being warned to watch out for debris and damaged roads following the widespread flooding that hit north Powys.

Several roads have been damaged and are under traffic management until they can be repaired.

The main A483 between Newtown and Welshpool was closed several times during the bad weather due to accidents and flooding, along with several B roads.

A Powys County Council statement said: "Powys County Council’s Highways Team, supported by emergency services, were at the forefront of work responding to various flood-related incidents across the county.

"The team are now undertaking flood clean-up works and removing debris from drains and culverts following this weather event."

Cllr Jackie Charlton, Cabinet Member for a Greener Powys, said: “I want to praise our staff for their hard work in responding to numerous incidents following the torrential rain the whole county experienced.

“This has had a significant impact on our road network which we will be assessing and will carry out the necessary repair works over the coming days.

“Many of the culverts and inlets that flooded or overtopped were completely overwhelmed in just a few hours. It is clear that in many locations our drainage infrastructure is failing to cope with the impact of climate change."

If your property was affected by flooding, please make sure that you report it at www.powys.gov.uk and search Report a Flood. Alternatively email land.drainage@powys.gov.uk
