Additonal street cleaning could be on the cards for Newtown

Newtown could soon have additional street cleaning with electric vehicles if the town council agrees to fund it.

Powys County Council is offering its new street cleaning vehicles to town and community councils to clean streets if they provide the funding.

At Monday night's town council meeting, councillors agreed to investigate the opportunity to fund additional street cleaning in the town centre and possibly other areas.

Lyn Parry, a manager at Powys County Council, said Brecon Town Council was already funding a similar scheme which saw its town centre cleaned once a week and then other wards cleaned regularly.

Mr Parry could not give a cost of the service during the meeting and said the town council could provide an operator, who would be trained, which would mean the vehicle would be provided for free.

He added that the county council had purchased several electric street cleaning vehicles as part of the levelling up fund.

Cllr Richard Edwards said it would be good for the town's residents and for tourism if additional cleaning could be provided.

Councillors agreed to investigate the matter further.
