Town Mayor resigns just months after being elected

The Mayor of Newtown, who was elected to office just months ago, has resigned from the position and as a councillor.

Town councillors have been told Mike Childs (pictured on the right) resigned from the positions for "private reasons."

A new Mayor will be elected at a full council meeting on Monday night.

A report to the council states: "Members will be aware that the Mayor has resigned from the council and as Mayor for private reasons."

The current Deputy Mayor, Cllr Margaret Lewington, could be elected to the position resulting in the need for a new deputy.

Councillors will vote on the matter on Monday.
