Town council to announce events for its 50th anniversary

22/04/2024 @ 06:51

A series of events are planned to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the formation of Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn Town Council.

The council as it is now was formed in 1974 as part of local government reorganisation.

"As we reflect on half a century of service to our community, we are reminded of the significant journey that has shaped our democratic local governance," said a council statement.

"The local democratic journey began way before then, with the formation of the Newtown Local Government District in 1866, evolving through various stages of municipal governance. Over the years, we have seen the mantle of community leadership pass through the hands of thirty-one chairpersons, each contributing to the fabric of your community.

"From the inaugural Mayor, Cllr W. G. Davies MBE, to your current Mayor, Cllr John Byrne, the community has been guided by dedicated councillors committed to serving Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn."

It added: "As stewards of the town's heritage and progress, your local council has adapted to changing times and expanded responsibilities. From public health and infrastructure to broader domains such as tourism, climate change, and crime prevention, your town council has remained steadfast in addressing the evolving needs and priorities of our residents."

The council said it would announce details of its celebration plans shortly.
