Town council to celebrate its 50th birthday

20/03/2024 @ 07:28

Newtown Town Council will celebrate its 50th anniversary in April and a range of celebrations could be held throughout the year to commemorate the occasion.

The current Newtown and Llanllwchaiairn Town Council was set up on 1 April 1974 as part of local government reorganisation.

On Monday, town councillors will discuss a range of possible events and activities to mark the occasion. These range from raffles, bench seats, an open air cinema, a time capsule, new play equipment and more.

"This presents an opportunity to celebrate Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn, our residents, and the exceptional community groups and initiatives fostered by the council over the past five decades," states a report to councillors at next week's full council meeting.

"The 50th anniversary can serve as a platform not only to celebrate this milestone but also to communicate, engage and educate one another on the representative democratic role and work of the town council.

"It's important to note, however, that staffing is currently at full capacity with ongoing projects. Therefore, many of the suggestions outlined in this report may be challenging to implement without additional assistance from councillors or by scaling down certain initiatives. It's advisable to carefully consider the feasibility and affordability of each suggestion with regard to existing staffing and funding
constraints."

Councillors will consider options on Monday.
