30mph main road limit could soon be lifted

A 30mph in place on the main Newtown to Welshpool road for several years could soon be lifted.

It has emerged that work is due to take place on part of the A483 trunk road between Abermule and Garthmyl where the speed limit has been in place due to a "weak verge."

The speed limit has hindered traffic moving along one of Mid Wales's busiest roads linking the West Midlands into Powys and West Wales.

According to Russell George, Member of the Senedd for Montgomeryshire, work is due to start on the verge in January.

He said: "The section of the A483 along the canal has been restricted to a 30mph limit for some time due to a weak verge.

"In my view, the restriction has been in place for far too long and I have been raising the need for repair works to strengthen the verge and the removal of the temporary restriction.

"In a response I received in December (2024) from the Welsh Government, they confirmed that the detailed design for the repairs has been completed and work is planned to start on site now in January 2025."
