Main Newtown road closed until Friday

The main A483 road between Newtown and Welshpool wil remain closed until at least tomorrow (Friday).

Water company Hafren Dyfrdwy said this afternoon that a burst water main was proving more difficult to repair than first thought.

The road closed this morning during the rush hour after water started breaking through the asphalt surface.

It caused major delays on the A483 at Fron near Garthmyl as traffic was diverted through the back road between Abermule and Caerhowel.

"To keep our teams, and your local community safe, we are having to close a section of the A483. The section of road is closed between the Nags Head, Garthmyl and the junction for Montgomery in Abermule, and we expect it to be closed until at least tomorrow," said a statement from the company.

"We’d urge anyone travelling in the area to plan ahead their journey and be prepared to follow the signed diversion in place to help keep traffic flowing as freely as possible.

"We know this is a busy, well used route – so we're sorry for the disruption, but this closure is essential in keeping everyone safe."
