Plans by a heritage group to apply for a place making grant to promote  the pioneers of Newtown have been backed by the town council.

The Heritage Hub 4 Mid Wales was set up to promote industrial pioneers including Bernard and Laura Ashley, David Davies, Robert Owen, and Pryce Pryce Jones.

At its full meeting this week, the town council received a presentation from  Ann Evans of the hub.

She said they had plans for a physical hub in the town and were also celebrating the 70th anniversary of the formation of the Laura Ashley fashion business.

HH4MW has worked to support the Peoples Collection Wales digital platform, the naming of the bypass roundabouts, and the installation of Heritage trail plaques in Newtown.

It's now applying for fundung towards a physical centre.

"With 2023 being the 70th Anniversary of the well-known fashion brand, with its iconic floral prints and products, HH4MW have great plans to celebrate all the things Laura Ashley," said a council spokesperson.

"Councillors heard of HH4MW plans to celebrate the legacy of Laura Ashley, with plans of a Quilt Exhibition from 9th March, fashion show in June, and a Garment Collection Exhibition at Powis Castle, Welshpool in September.

"Newtown & Llanllwchaiarn Town Council resolved to support Heritage Hub for Mid Wales (HH4MW) application for a Place Making Grant for the Heritage Hub proposal and will provide a letter of endorsement."
