Newtown's Preem Indian restaurant is up for a national award judged by MPs tomorrow (Wednesday).

The restaurant, in Pool Road, Newtown, has been placed in the finals of the Lyca Tiffin Cup, a competition for South Asian restaurants after Montgomeryshire MP, Glyn Davies, nominated it. Chefs from The Preem will be preparing their culinary delicacies in the House of Commons kitchens in London tomorrow for the finals.

Mr Davies said he was very pleased to have The Preem represent Montogmeryshire in the finals of such a famous competition. "They'll be battling it out with chefs from throughout the country and I'm very pleased to have Montgomeryshire represented here in the House of Commons."

The award is given by the Tiffin Club of MPs, formed in 2006 by John Barrett MP, Michael Fabricant MP and Keith Vaz MP.

The award promotes South Asian food in the UK and raises money for charity. The restaurants eligible to participate for South Asian food are Bangladeshi, Cambodian, Cantonese, Chinese, Filipino, Indian, Indonesian, Malaysian, Nepalese, Pakistani, Singaporean, Sri Lanka, Taiwanese, Thai and Vietnamese.

MPs nominate a restaurant which is put forward to the final. The Preem was one of 62 entries from throughout the UK, with 12 in tomorrow's final. Keith Vaz MP, chairman of the Tiffin Club, said: “We are delighted The Preen has beaten extremely stiff competition in order to become a finalist.
