Health Board announces public events over hospital changes

Powys Teaching Health Board has announced a number of public events throughout the county as part of a consultation that will reshape services and could lead to Newtown hospital becoming a hub for north Powys.

The health board’s Better Together report has outlined changes that include the removal of all beds, X-Ray facility and the Minor Injuries Unit from Welshpool Hospital for a new health hub in Newtown.

It is being fiercely opposed by residents across the area who fear a further reduction in our already sparse rural health services.

Last week the Board agreed to press ahead to the next phase of the plans that will also see other community hospitals lose certain services across the county.

A campaign group has been set up in Welshpool to fight the changes, and there is a petition currently doing the rounds.

The Better Together consultation runs from October 5 to January 10, 2027 and includes proposals for adult physical and mental health services, urgent care and some diagnostic services.

They are keen to hear the views of the public in person so these events provide the opportunity to have your say.

Drop-in events run from 2pm to 7pm and will be held on:

• Wednesday, October 21 – Llanfyllin Youth & Community Centre 
• Thursday, November 19 – The Institute, Llanfair Caereinion 
• Tuesday, December 1 – Welshpool Town Hall
• Thursday, December 3 – Elephant & Castle Hotel, Newtown
