A young Newtown resident with strong links to local sport has been appointed as a Community Youth Representative on Newtown Town Council.

The council has co-opted Cameron Molloy as its second Community Youth Representative as part of efforts to strengthen the voice of young people in local decision making.

Cameron, who has lived in Newtown all his life, will work alongside the council’s existing youth representative to help ensure the views of younger residents are heard on issues affecting the town.

The council said Cameron brings a strong understanding of the local community through his involvement with residents, organisations and community groups across Newtown.

His involvement in football as a referee, player and spectator has also given him insight into the challenges facing grassroots sport, local clubs and volunteers.

Speaking about his appointment, Cameron said: “I am interested in this role because it provides an opportunity to support the community I have grown up in, while also allowing me to develop my political career.

“I believe that local roles are an important way to understand the needs of the community and contribute to meaningful improvements in the area.”

Cameron has highlighted grassroots sport, improving local facilities, encouraging greater participation among young people and ensuring local voices are heard as key areas of interest.

Newtown & Llanllwchaiarn Town Council said the appointment reinforces its commitment to youth engagement and providing young residents with opportunities to contribute to the future development of the town.

The council added that it looks forward to working with Cameron and its existing Community Youth Representative to support community development initiatives and strengthen links between younger residents and local decision makers.
