Community sharefest and disco event planned for Newtown this half term

Residents in Newtown are being invited to give unwanted items a new home at a free community Sharefest event taking place during the half term break.

The event, organised through the Open Energy project and funded by the National Lottery Community Fund, will be held at Hafan yr Afon in Newtown on Sunday, May 31 from 12pm.

Designed to support reuse and reduce waste, organisers say the event aims to encourage a more circular economy by helping people pass on items they no longer need while picking up something useful in return.

Visitors can donate or collect clothes, books, plants and toys as part of a Swap Shop. People can bring up to five items, although organisers stress that anyone can attend even if they have nothing to donate.

The event will also feature Creative Stuff Newtown’s Open Tuniversity, where visitors can choose a second hand vinyl record from the 1950s through to the 1980s and have it played during the afternoon.

The day will end with an hour of music and dancing at the “Let’s Go Round Again Disco”, with tracks selected by members of the public.

Organisers say the event is designed to be family friendly and environmentally focused, creating a relaxed community space for people to browse, share and meet others.

Entry is free and no booking is required.

Open Energy is part of Open Newtown, a not for profit social enterprise and community land trust which manages around 130 acres of public green space across Newtown. The three year project focuses on promoting reuse and repair initiatives while helping residents save energy and reduce costs through education and energy advice.
