Schools closed and hazardous driving conditions

Storm Goretti brought heavy snowfall across Newtown and wider parts of north Powys overnight, leading to school closures, hazardous road conditions and travel disruption on Thursday morning.

Snow began falling late on Thursday evening and continued through the night, settling across much of the area including Newtown, Welshpool and surrounding rural communities. In some higher and more exposed locations, significant snow fall was reported, making roads difficult to pass and pavements hazardous.

All schools in and around Newtown confirmed closures or delayed openings due to unsafe travel conditions, particularly affecting school transport routes from surrounding villages. Parents and carers are being advised to check directly with individual schools for the latest updates.

Road conditions across the area have been challenging, with a number of local routes affected by snow and ice. Drivers reported slow-moving traffic and difficulties on untreated roads, particularly in rural parts of Powys where drifting snow has also been an issue.

Dyfed-Powys Police have issued advice urging residents to only travel if absolutely necessary. Officers are reminding motorists to take extra care, allow more time for journeys and ensure vehicles are winter-ready. They have also advised drivers to check road conditions before setting off and to avoid less-used routes where possible.

Powys County Council has confirmed that gritting teams have been active overnight and into the early hours, focusing on priority routes including main roads, bus routes and access to key services. The council says it will continue to monitor conditions throughout the day and deploy additional resources where needed, as freezing temperatures are expected to persist.

Residents are also being warned to take care when walking, as icy conditions remain on pavements and paths, particularly in shaded areas.

Weather warnings remain in place across parts of Wales, and further snowfall or icy conditions cannot be ruled out. People are being encouraged to keep up to date with local travel updates and weather forecasts, and to check on vulnerable neighbours where possible.

More updates will follow as conditions develop across Newtown and the surrounding area.
