CCTV and trail cameras are still being considered across Newtown’s parks and open spaces to tackle ongoing fly-tipping, according to a report submitted to the town council.
Open Newtown, which manages more than 100 acres of green space under a long-term lease, says waste problems remain an issue at certain hotspots despite regular collections and monitoring.
In a report to Newtown Town Council's Services Committee, the organisation stated that its contractor empties litter bins twice a week and that teams closely monitor problem areas.
“Litter bins are emptied twice a week by our waste management contractor Andrew Evans,” the report states. “We continue to monitor bin usage, where bins are regularly overflowing.”
The issue has led Open Newtown to consider new enforcement measures.
“We may need to introduce CCTV and trail cameras to identify the small number of repeat fly tipping offenders. Investigating options.”
The report also confirms that new signage will be put up at several locations, with monitoring continuing in the meantime.
