Shoppers and businesses in Newtown are being warned to expect disruption this Saturday as two opposing demonstrations are set to take place in the town centre.
Crowds are expected to gather from late morning, with one group planning a march against immigration and a counter-demonstration organised close by in response. Both are due to assemble in the heart of the shopping area, raising concerns about possible clashes.
Police say they will have additional officers on duty throughout the day. “Plans and resources” are in place, they confirmed, to deal with any disorder if it arises.
The protests have already caused unease locally. Traders say they fear a loss of trade during one of the busiest times of the week, while some residents have spoken out against the demonstrations altogether. One told MyNewtown: “We are a peaceful town and this protest does not have any part in it.”
In recent days flags and banners have been seen around the town, underlining the growing tension ahead of the weekend. Authorities say their priority will be to keep people safe and to prevent disruption from escalating.
