Newtown is gearing up for a major sporting event in July and August 2025, with plans to celebrate key heritage anniversaries, bringing the community together through sport.
This year, the town will celebrate several anniversaries, including the 150th anniversary of Newtown AFC, the 100th anniversary of Newtown RFC, the 100th anniversary of Newtown Silver Band's band room, the 200th anniversary of Robert Owen's creation of New Harmony, Indiana, and the 100th anniversary of the birth of designer Laura Ashley.
According to a report going to the Economy and Environment Committee of Newtown Town Council, local organisations have begun discussions on hosting a series of weekend events across the town.
The celebrations will culminate in a special 'Try a Sport' day in the park in August. This concept is inspired by the historic Pryce Pryce-Jones Sports and Music events that took place at the Recreation Ground between the 1880s and early 1900s.
The report said the proposed event aligns with Newtown’s Place Plan objectives, which support community events and aim to promote a year-round calendar of activities.
The report said by working alongside various local organisations, the event will encourage participation in sports and provide opportunities for people of all ages to get involved.
A formal meeting is set for Tuesday, 18 February, where further discussions will shape the plans. If successful, organisers hope this could become an annual tradition, strengthening community ties and introducing new sporting opportunities to the people of Newtown.
