Newtown residents could be hit by an 13 per cent increase in the council tax precept from the town council, in addition to the anticipated 8.9 per cent increase from Powys County Council.
Newtown Town Council is currently setting its precept, although it is expected to rise by 13 per cent in the next financial year.
Members of the town council's Resources Committee have asked the full council to consider "the impact on Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn residents of an 11.5 per cent increase precept in these difficult times." The figures have since jumped.
That would mean a £26.02 annual increase for a Band D property to £198 as part of the town council's element on the overall council tax.
The town council is expected to set its precept at its next full council meeting later this month.
Dyfed Powys Police and the Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service are yet to confirm their precept, although they are both expected to rise.
