11/12/2024 @ 11:28

Newtown's iconic Royal Welsh Warehouse, also known as the Pryce Jones Building, was the scene of a launch event for the new Newtown Fashion and Textiles Academy.

Hosted by former Miss World Wales and BBC broadcaster Gabriella Jukes, the evening celebrated the town's rich textile heritage and its exciting future in the fashion industry.

The Academy, housed in the transformed Pryce Jones Building, boasts state-of-the-art facilities that blend heritage with modern design. Offering a range of courses from sustainable fashion to technical sewing and pattern design, the Academy provides opportunities for aspiring designers and career changers alike.

The UK Government’s Shared Prosperity Fund provided funding for the Academy, which aims to develop the sustainable fashion sector and continue Newtown’s textile legacy.

Guests were treated to a tribute to Laura Ashley with an exhibition showcasing her iconic designs, including a rare vintage dress. Interactive workshops invited attendees to take part in design and upcycling activities. At the same time, music by Level 4 performance student Tabby Kendall and a choreographed dance by the College’s Performing Arts students entertained the crowd.

Powys and Newtown town councillor David Selby said: “This Academy breathes new life into an iconic space and empowers our community to thrive in the creative economy.”

CEO of NPTC Group of Colleges, Mark Dacey said: "This brand-new Fashion Academy is poised to nurture the fashion leaders of tomorrow.”

The College's catering students provided and served locally sourced food and drink. Councillor David Selby spoke about local growth, and Jenny Hollaway, CEO of Fashion Enter, championed social enterprise in the fashion industry.

The highlight of the evening was a runway show featuring designs by the Academy's students, expertly compered by Sustainable Fashion lecturer Carys Jones. The show demonstrated the impressive talent and creativity of the next generation of fashion designers.
