New mayor elected after resignation of incumbent

Newtown has a new mayor after the previous one resigned, and he's the husband of the deputy mayor.

Cllr Peter Lewington was tonight (Monday) elected chair of the town council unapposed.

His election came after the previous mayor, Cllr Mike Childs, who has resigned from the position and councillor for personal reasons.

Cllr Lewington joins his wife, Cllr Margaret Lewington, who was elected deputy mayor in May.

Thanking Cllr Childs, Cllr Peter Lewington said: "We send our best wishes at such a difficult time for them."
