Hundreds of knives have been surrendered in Newtown during the visit of The Knife Angel, it has been revealed.

A knife surrender bin was left next to the monument by the Oriel Davies Gallery throughout its 28 day stay. When it was opened by representatives from The British Ironworks Centre at Oswestry, they found a staggering number of knives had been posted.

"Newtown Powys surrender bin and look what Powys have handed in - within the Angels 28 day visit to Wales. This is evidence of the positive impact the Angel has where ever it goes across the country," they said with photos of the bin and knives.

The Knife Angel was in Newtown until Wednesday when it was taken to Gateshead where it is now on display.

It was built at the British Ironworks Centre to highlight anti violence and knife crime.

Thousands of people visited it in Newtown during January.
