Railway contractors could help with community projects

Contractors working on the new bridge and access at Newtown Railway Station could soon be helping improve or support other parts of the town.

Town councillors have heard from a company representing Network Rail which is undertaking the work by its contractors.

Neil Hallam from Sonar Engagement, a company acting on behalf of Network Rail, spoke to the full council meeting tonight (Monday) to seek ideas for projects that contractors could undertake as part of a community commitment scheme.

He said there might be times when contractors could not undertake work on certain days for various reasons and they would be re-tasked to other projects in the community, as well as undertaking specific community work that was agreed with the council.

Town councillors have been asked to come up with suggestions before the work at the station begins in the spring.
