Robins win race for goal scorer

Newtown have signed a 50-goal striker as they prepare to start the new Welsh Premier League season on their new 3G surface at Latham Park.

Alex Hughes signed on the dotted line this week after switching from Malpas of the Cheshire  League.

The Robins fended off advances from Chester and Newcastle Town to secure Hughes' signature who now wants to make a name for himself in the Welsh Premier League.

He said: "I'm over the moon to have signed for Newtown. It is a big step for me as last year I played in the Cheshire League. I am now looking forward to my first taste of Welsh football.

"Before the interest from Newtown I had never really looked at Welsh football or heard anything about it."

Hughes is not the first Malpas striker to sign for the Newtown. Many Robins' supporters will remember the arrival of Tommy Lloyd.

Hughes played for Whitchurch Alport as a youngster before moving into the men's game with Malpas.
