Newtown close in on Shropshire title

11/09/2024 @ 10:40

Newtown are within touching distance of clinching the Shropshire Division One title after securing a victory, and seeing their two main rivals lose to go well clear at the top.

David Anthony came on as a late change to take 4-12 and help to bowl Wellington out for just 140, paving the way for David Laird (68no) and Tom Foulkes (35no) to see Newtown through to a six-wicket win, as the news came in that rivals Cound and Bomere Health had lost.

Montgomery’s late charge for the Division Two promotion places was thwarted at Quatt II who dismissed Monty for 140 after setting a first innings target of 165-6.

Welshpool and Guilsfield & Llandrinio’s Division Three matches were abandoned due to rain midway through the afternoon.

Newtown remain on target for promotion from Division Four after bowling Harpers out for 117, thanks largely to Riley Bellamore (3-12) and Cai Van Lill (3-33). Skipper Callum Foulkes (60) and Danny Foulkes (39) steered Newtown home in the 18th over with five wickets down.

Rob Davies (4-26) and Blake Spiller (3-28) led the Llanidloes attack as Madeley II were dismissed for just 100, also in Division Four. Joe Pritchard hit 65 for a comfortable nine-wicket win.

Will Gannon hit 59 to give Welshpool II a smaller share of the points at Cae Glas in Division Six, his team ending on 116-4 after the hosts had set 180-6. Henry Day took 4-35.

Tom Corfield (78) and Elwyn Turner (50) were in the runs for Montgomery II, but their 191-5 wasn’t enough as Knockin & Kinnerley II were able to win in the 28th over with three just wickets down.

Guilsfield & Llandrinio II’s Rupert Shingler (3-4) and Paul Arkell (3-13) combined to dismiss Chelmarsh for just 90, with Shingler (30) and George Edwards (31no) guiding the Guils to a five-wicket win in Division Seven.
