Frustrating opening weekend for local rugby

06/09/2024 @ 08:31

As the kick off looms for the start of the 2024-25 season, it is disappointment for Division Two North sides Welshpool, Newtown and Machynlleth as they find themselves without a game, writes Gary Williams.

When the league fixtures were announced there were 10 teams in the division, giving 18  league games. However, the recent withdrawal by Shotton Steel leaves 16 games, a far from satisfactory situation.

Clubs will find it challenging to survive with so many blank weekends and just eight home league games all season.

The WRU bemoan the fact that players are leaving the game and then serve up this league structure with half the Saturdays in the season being blank.

In the games that are being played, COBRA host Bala in what is now their 'derby' in Division One North and will be looking to start their campaign with points in the table.

Bala looked impressive in their friendly match against Welshpool last weekend, running in some great tries but they know it will be so different at Cae Meifod when results matter.

There is a mouth-watering Mid Wales clash in Division Three North East as Llanidloes take on COBRA 2nds at Cae Hafren.

With Jordan 'Doddy' Davies back as head coach, the hosts will be looking to start their season on a high against what will be a formidable task against COBRA's second string. This should be a cracker to start the season.

Next Saturday, September 14, all roads will lead to The Rec in Newtown when Welshpool pay a visit - now that will definitely be a cracker!
