Gavin on coaching staff

Gavin Cadwallader has hung up his boots after an 11 year Welsh Premier League career and nearly 200 appearances to join the coaching staff at Newtown.

Cadwallder, now 31, has decided to retire from the game but will become part of Chris Hughes' back room team for the coming season as first team coach, working alongside Chris Hughes and Calum Mckenzie.

The defender, formerly of Shrewsbury Town, Cefn Druids, Aberystwyth and Airbus admitted injuries have caught up on him and it is the right time to retire.

He said: "It has been a while coming really and I decided on it at the end of the season. I've had quite a lot of injuries in the last few years, and haven't been able to commit as much to training as I would have liked.

"I haven't been able to give what I should be giving really, I spoke to the gaffer at the end of the season, and said I couldn't commit fully on the playing site, and decided it was time to hang up the boots."

Cadwallader has been coaching with Shrewsbury Town, for who he once played, for 11 years and has jumped at the chance to join the Robins coaching staff when offered by Hughes.

He will be part of the team for the first time next Tuesday when Haughmond visit Latham Park.

He added: "I spoke to Chris over the summer and he has been brilliant with me to be fair, he understands I didn't want to carry on playing and that I want to do coaching. It is what I wanted to do and I was at the game on Saturday, we got chatting and things went from there really.”
