Newtown captain Matthew Cook has left Latham Park after a successful five and a half year stay, the club’s website reports.

Cook, who joined initially from Airbus in 2010/11, before a short stint back at the Airfield, turned out 132 times for the Robins in his five and a half year stay, scoring four goals.

Boss Chris Hughes was disappointed to lose a man who brought so much to Latham Park. He said: "It was with a reluctant decision by Cookie to leave but he wants to play regularly and we have to respect that.

"He has been great for this club, has been here through everything, took over as captain shortly after I arrived, and captained us in the Welsh Cup Final, and took is into Europe.

"He will be missed by everyone at this club, players, supporters and staff, because he was a key component in our ranks for many years."

Leaving along with Cook are two January signings.

Former Shrewsbury Town and Wrexham midfielder Jamie Tolley, who arrived in January after a spell out of the game, has departed the club.

Tolley made seven starts and four substitute appearances, and leaving with him his another January signing Scott Ryan.

Striker Ryan joined from Market Drayton, making seven appearances in his spell, scoring one goal, a notable late leveller against Bala Town.

Hughes confirmed he is looking at new signings, hoping to announce two this weekend, and also looking at other potential targets.
