Monty edge local derby

Montgomery and Welshpool have been two sides in early season form in the Shropshire Cricket League Division Two, so it was not surprising that there was very little between them on a rain hit weekend.

Monty were put in to bat, and got off to a good start with Tim Davies (46) and Aaron Ruff-Cock (35) building solid foundations, but the mid order was stifled by Mat Mcwhinnie (3-25) as the hosts finished on 134-7.

Welshpool’s reply struggled to find momentum and if it wasn’t for an unbeaten 34 from veteran Russell Cadwallader in mid-order, it could have been a different outcome as Pool held out for 122-7 from their 35 overs.

Newtown's Division One match was abandoned while Guilsfield's game in Division Four was cancelled.

Only Welshpool II saw their match completed in the Reserve Divisions, and they set 226-3 for Llanidloes II to chase. Openers Nick Davies (77) and John Gough (78no) set the scene with Christopher Owen (57) also weighing in. In reply Llanidloes held out on 109-8 to deny Welshpool an outright victory.
